May 5, (V7N) — Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said the government is working to establish an acceptable Media Commission to address challenges and strengthen the country’s media industry.
Speaking as chief guest at the installation ceremony of the newly elected committee of the Munshiganj Press Club at Shilpakala Academy, Swapon emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring press freedom as pledged by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He announced that a digital measurement system is being introduced to determine newspaper circulation, stressing that the public has the right to receive accurate and truthful information. Swapon added that fascist and authoritarian regimes attempt to silence the media, but Bangladesh is moving in the opposite direction.
The minister urged journalists to play a responsible role in maintaining objectivity and presenting the real picture of society.
Other speakers included Munshiganj‑3 MP Md. Kamruzzaman Ratan, Acting Deputy Commissioner Mousumi Mahbub, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Menhazul Alam, Zila Parishad Administrator A.K.M. Eradat Manu, former MCCI president Engineer Saiful Islam, and former Jubo Dal member secretary Sultan Ahmed. The program was chaired by Munshiganj Press Club president Atikur Rahman Tipu, with general secretary Md. Gulzar Hossain delivering the welcome address.
