Dhaka, May 05 (V7N) — The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal has identified evidence of at least 58 deaths in connection with the Shapla Chattar incident involving Dhaka, Narayanganj, Comilla, and Chittagong.
Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam disclosed the information at a briefing on Tuesday, stating that the identities of the victims have also been confirmed.
He said that around 90 percent of the investigation into the incident has already been completed, and the prosecution expects to submit its final report by June 7. He also noted that the death toll could rise once the full investigation concludes.
According to the tribunal, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, while investigations are ongoing against around 30 accused persons, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and senior officials of the then law enforcement agencies.
The Shapla Chattar incident refers to a crackdown on a Hefazat-e-Islam rally held at Motijheel in Dhaka on May 5–6, 2013. The event has since remained a subject of national and international debate regarding the use of force and alleged casualties during the operation.
