May 5, (V7N) — Violence and law enforcement operations marked Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday as Abdul Halim (45), head of the Halim Group, was gunned down by terrorists in Rohingya Camp‑7, Kutupalong, Ukhiya, while two others were critically injured.
Witnesses said Halim, son of Badsha Mia and resident of Block F‑6, was returning from the market when gunmen opened fire indiscriminately in G Block around 7:30 pm. He was rushed to MSF Hospital in Kutupalong but succumbed to injuries around 8 pm. The injured, Mohammad Ullah (35) and Mohammad Nur (34) of Block F‑5, were later transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
Camp sources reported panic among residents as terrorists fled immediately after the attack. Security has since been tightened across the camp. OC Mizanur Rahman of Ukhiya Police Station said inquiries are underway.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation Tuesday morning, Ramu police arrested seven men with weapons and explosives while they were allegedly preparing for a robbery in Bora Dhalirchara, Rashidnagar Union. The detainees include Amir Hossain alias Kalabanshi (27) and six others. Police recovered a locally made gun, ammunition, knives, iron rods, “chocolate bombs,” and tools for weapon‑making. OC Monirul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed legal action against the suspects.
In another development, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 100,000 yaba tablets worth Tk 30 million in three separate raids at the Ukhiya border on Monday. The drugs were recovered from Palangkhali BOP (80,000 tablets in two operations) and Hoi Kyung BOP (20,000 tablets). Lt. Col. Md. Zahirul Islam, commander of Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB).
