PABNA April 29, (V7N)  - A court has sent former director of Pabna Mental Hospital Dr. Tanmoy Prakash Biswas to jail in six cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Dr. Tanmoy Prakash Biswas surrendered to the Pabna Senior Special Judge's Court around 12 noon on Wednesday (April 29) and applied for bail. After the hearing, the learned court rejected the bail and ordered him to be sent to jail.

Monowar Hossain, Deputy Assistant Director of ACC Integrated District Office, Pabna, confirmed this information.

Dr. Tanmoy Prakash Biswas is the son of the late Virat Chandra Biswas of Kultia village in Monirampur upazila of Jessore. He currently lives in flat number -704 in Star Apartment on Shyam Thakur Road, Dilapur, Pabna Municipality. He is the former director of Pabna Mental Hospital.

According to the case source, former ACC Pabna Assistant Director (currently Deputy Director) Md. Shahidul Alam filed six separate cases against 5 people, including Dr. Tanmoy Prakash Biswas, on charges of irregularities and embezzlement in procurement and various administrative activities while he was the director of Pabna Mental Hospital. The cases were filed on June 13 and 14, 2022. These cases were filed after preliminary facts were found after a long investigation.

The other accused in the case are Humayun Kabir, a former Pabna District Marketing Officer and currently a senior agricultural marketing officer at the Dinajpur Agricultural Marketing Department, and three brothers, AHM Arefin, AHM Rezaun, and AHM Faisal, sons of the late Abdul Awal of Chhatiani Mohalla in Pabna Municipality.

The case statement states that the accused, through premeditated abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and misconduct, in collusion with each other, embezzled 88 lakh 7 thousand 768 taka by showing the price of food items of groups A, B, C purchased for the mental hospital in the fiscal years 2017-2018 and 2018-19 higher than the actual market price. This is a punishable offense under Section 409/34 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.

The investigating officer of the cases, Deputy Assistant Director of the ACC Integrated District Office Pabna, Monowar Hossain, after conducting the investigation, submitted separate charge sheets in six cases to the learned court on March 12, 2025.

Tanmay Prakash appeared in court on Wednesday for his scheduled appearance in these cases. When his lawyers filed a bail application on his behalf, the ACC prosecution strongly opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court judge rejected the bail application considering the seriousness of the crime and ordered him to be sent directly to Pabna District Jail.

The lawyers for the state were PP Advocate Malay Kumar Das Roy and Dr. Tanmoy Prakash Biswas, while Advocate Sajjad Iqbal Liton and Advocate Ali Reza Parvez were the lawyers for the state.
