Beirut, Apr 29 (V7N) — Lebanon has decided to pursue direct negotiations with Israel in an effort to secure a permanent ceasefire and ensure the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, Foreign Minister Youssef Raghi said.
The announcement came during a phone conversation with Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, according to a statement from the Lebanese Foreign Ministry, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The two leaders discussed the latest security developments in Lebanon, with Poland expressing strong support for Lebanon’s sovereignty. Warsaw also opposed any attempts to alter internationally recognized borders or occupy Lebanese territory.
Tensions between Israel and the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah escalated on March 2, amid the broader regional dynamics involving the United States and Iran. Although a fragile ceasefire has been in place, it remains uncertain. On April 23, the United States announced an extension of the truce for an additional three weeks, though Hezbollah was not part of the arrangement.
Adding to the uncertainty, Hezbollah’s leadership has rejected proposals for direct talks with Israel, warning that such negotiations could further destabilize the situation.
The developments highlight the fragile security environment in the region, as diplomatic efforts continue alongside persistent tensions.
