Dhaka, July 6 (V7N) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged all political parties to abandon negative thinking and work collaboratively toward establishing a robust democratic system, emphasizing that this unity is essential for protecting national security.

Speaking at a discussion titled “National Unity Is Essential for National Security,” organized by the Foundation for Strategic and Development Studies (FSDS) at a Gulshan hotel, Fakhrul highlighted that despite differences in political views, the citizens of Bangladesh remain united in their commitment to safeguarding the nation.

He stated, “From today’s discussion, we agreed on one thing – our people are united in protecting national security. There may be differences in opinion among political parties, but people are not divided.” He further observed that during times of crisis, Bangladeshis have historically come together to defend national interests.

Expressing optimism, Fakhrul said, “Many people are speaking negatively, but I see the future very positively. People in Bangladesh are debating, discussing and through this process, I believe they will reach common ground. Through these discussions and debates, we will find the right path and be able to build the democratic institutions we need.”

He stressed the critical need to strengthen democratic institutions, stating, “If we can do that, we will be able to ensure national security and move other issues forward as well.” He emphasized the importance of empowering citizens and restoring their sovereignty, adding, “The real issue is empowering people and ensuring their sovereignty. If we can do this, national security and other matters will become easier to manage.”

Fakhrul urged political parties to unite on foundational issues, return power to the people, and build a truly democratic electoral system. He emphasized that elections must reflect the will of the electorate: “Through their votes, people should be able to express their opinions. That’s how a truly democratic system can be built."
