Chattogram, Aug 12 (V7N)- The government has largely finalized plans to build a modern prison in Jangal Salimpur of Chattogram, with prison authorities seeking 100 acres of land for the project.
The proposed facility will include not only accommodation for prisoners but also rehabilitation and skills-development facilities aimed at preparing inmates for life after release.
Jangal Salimpur, a sprawling hilly area of around 3,100 acres, was previously considered a high-risk area. Its image changed after a joint forces operation brought the area under administrative control. The government has since been considering various development projects there.
At present, Chattogram Central Jail, located on around 14.40 acres beside Laldighi, has an official capacity of 2,249 prisoners. However, around 6,500 inmates are currently being held there, creating significant pressure on the existing facilities.
The proposed modern prison is expected to include a library, correctional facilities, vocational training center, physical exercise facilities, sports zone and religious worship areas.
Under the proposed plan, each prisoner would be provided with around 70 to 100 square feet of living space.
Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concerns about possible eviction after learning about plans to establish government facilities, including the prison, in Jangal Salimpur.
However, the Chattogram District Administration has said the project will be implemented in a planned manner, with efforts to protect the environment and avoid displacing existing settlements.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Zahidul Islam Miah said the current living conditions at Chattogram Central Jail are unsuitable and unhealthy for prisoners.
He said construction of a modern prison is part of the government's commitment to improving correctional facilities, and work is underway to move the plan forward.
