Dhaka, Aug 09 (V7N) – An initiative will be taken to make education free for women up to the postgraduate level, Ziaur Rahman Foundation Vice President Dr Zubaida Rahman has said.
She made the remarks at a discussion meeting held in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday (August 9).
Zubaida Rahman said the government is taking various initiatives to promote women's equality and leadership. She also said steps are being taken to expand healthcare opportunities for all.
She highlighted the role of sports in developing children's talents, particularly girls, saying the proposed 'New Bud Sports' initiative would help young people develop their abilities.
She also claimed that the BNP government had created a precedent in combating violence against women by expediting the trial process in cases involving violence and sexual assault against women.
Zubaida further said the United Nations and the Bangladesh government would work together to establish a society based on equality and equity.
At the same event, State Minister for Planning Jonayed Saki said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was not attempting to compete with the achievements of the July Uprising; rather, he had described July as a people's war.
He alleged that some doctors failed to uphold their professional oath by refusing to provide treatment to people injured during the July movement. He called for identifying doctors who had become politically active and ensuring accountability where necessary.
Jonayed Saki also said the government does not want to limit the history of July to simply counting the number of martyrs. Instead, he said, efforts should be made to present the individual stories and contributions of every martyr to the people.
