Teknaf, Aug. 11 (V7N) — Police in Teknaf have arrested a fugitive wanted in 16 cases involving alleged kidnapping, drugs, firearms and murder, recovering several weapons and rounds of ammunition during the operation.
Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed the arrest.
According to police, acting on a tip-off, officers learned on Monday night that Abdul Khalek, also known as Nahid, a wanted suspect in 16 cases, had been detained by local residents in the West Leda area of Teknaf.
Police reached the area at around 1am on Tuesday and took Khalek into custody from an agitated crowd.
Police said witnesses told them that Khalek and five unidentified associates had entered the area in a CNG-powered vehicle. Local residents became suspicious and chased the group, prompting the five unidentified men to flee while Khalek was detained.
During a search, police allegedly recovered a pistol concealed beneath Khalek’s lungi.
Police also said the other suspects abandoned three single-shot firearms and ammunition inside the rear storage compartment of the CNG vehicle while fleeing.
The weapons and ammunition were subsequently recovered in the presence of local witnesses, police said.
The police said legal proceedings in connection with the incident were under way.
