Teknaf, Aug 07 (V7N) — Senior journalist Jasim Uddin Tipu was accorded a reception by fellow journalists in Teknaf after obtaining bail in a case that colleagues described as false and harassing.
The reception was held on Wednesday evening at the temporary office of the Teknaf Sangbadik Samity (TESAS), where the organisation's leaders and members gathered to express solidarity with the veteran journalist.
Among those present were TESAS Convener Momtazul Islam Monu, Member Secretary Saiyadul Amin Chowdhury, senior members Alhaj Muhammad Taher Naim, Humayun Rashid, Shamsul Alam Sharek, Ramzan Uddin Potol, Ziaur Rahman Zia, Muhammad Jahangir Alam, Helal Uddin, Saddam Hossain and Abdullah Al Samrat, among others.
Speakers at the event described Tipu as one of Teknaf's senior journalists who has long worked for national and local media outlets. They said he regularly reports on local issues, development challenges and public concerns, and has produced a number of illustrated reports on the proposed division of a local union in recent months.
The speakers also noted that he has frequently reported on alleged irregularities and corruption, describing investigative reporting as an essential part of journalistic responsibility and public accountability.
TESAS leaders alleged that Tipu had been named in a case related to an incident in Hnila Union because of his reporting on the union division issue. They condemned the case and called for its withdrawal, describing it as politically motivated and intended to harass a journalist.
The organisation's leaders warned that journalists in Teknaf would continue to protest through democratic means if, in their view, legal actions were used to obstruct professional journalism.
