Dhaka, July 06 (V7N) – BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami is engaging in duplicity by simultaneously calling for election postponement while nominating candidates.
“At one moment they are talking about postponing the elections, and at the same time they are nominating candidates for various parliamentary constituencies. Just look at the newspapers — Jamaat leaders have been nominated for more than 33 to 34 seats,” Rizvi said.
He made these remarks at a discussion and prayer program marking holy Ashura, held at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday afternoon.
Rizvi criticized Jamaat’s historical stance, saying, “For ages, Jamaat has failed to understand the sentiments of the people. If they had, they would not have opposed the Liberation War in 1971, nor would they have joined General Ershad’s 1986 elections alongside Sheikh Hasina. They are still out of tune with the people’s pulse, seeking to delay elections for their own political gains.”
Drawing parallels with the Battle of Karbala, Rizvi described the conflict as a fight between justice and injustice. “Imam Hussain’s (RA) forces stood for justice and democracy, while Yazid’s forces represented tyranny. Karbala teaches us lessons about standing firm in the struggle for democracy,” he said.
Rizvi expressed hope that the interim government would not extend the election schedule to benefit any individual or political party.
