Dhaka, Jun 08 (V7N) – Mild to moderate earthquake tremors were felt in several parts of Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, at around 11:00 pm on Sunday, causing panic among residents.

According to Assistant Meteorologist Farzana Sultana of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake originated in neighboring Bhutan and measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Meanwhile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the epicenter was located approximately 28 kilometers northeast of Bhutan's capital, Thimphu. Due to the relatively shallow depth of the quake, tremors were felt across a wide area, including parts of Bangladesh.

Following the tremors, many residents of multi-storey buildings and residential neighborhoods in Dhaka hurriedly evacuated their homes and gathered in streets and open spaces as a precaution.

However, no major damage to property or loss of life had been reported anywhere in the country as of the initial assessments.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, while residents have been advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines in the event of possible aftershocks.
