Dar es Salaam, Sept 7 (V7N) – Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Mzena Hospital in Zanzibar, Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced .
"His Excellency Hafidh Ameir Hassan passed away early this morning. He had been receiving treatment for a heart condition at Mzena Hospital," Ndejembi said in a statement shared on the Tanzanian presidency's X account . He extended his condolences and noted that funeral preparations were underway in southern Kizimkazi .
A private man who largely stayed out of the public eye, Ameir Hassan married Samia Suluhu in 1978. The couple had four children, two of whom are also in the public eye:

President Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania's first female president in March 2021 following the death of John Magufuli. She won a landslide victory in the October 2025 national election, securing 98 percent of the vote, though the election was criticized by international observers following allegations of deadly repression of protests.
President Hassan is currently in Dar es Salaam and is expected to travel to Zanzibar later on Monday for funeral arrangements . The government has declared a period of mourning, with flags to fly at half-mast until the burial . The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, at 4:00 PM local time .
