PABNA, Sept 08 (V7N) — A university student was arrested after allegedly vandalising idols and other property at an ISKCON temple in Pabna city on Monday morning.
The student, identified as Pranth Kumar Das, 25, was caught at the scene by temple authorities and handed over to police. Police later arrested him and produced him before a court.
However, police said the student appeared to be suffering from a mental health condition and that his behaviour became abnormal after he entered the temple.
The incident took place at the Pabna ISKCON temple near Pabna Polytechnic Institute on Monday morning (September 7).
Pranth Kumar Das is a second-year student in the Department of Statistics at Pabna University of Science and Technology. He is the son of Prashanta Chandra Mondal of Sudhirpur area in Atrai upazila of Naogaon.
According to temple authorities and police, Pranth entered the temple after finding it open in the morning and allegedly began vandalising the premises. At one point, he allegedly damaged idols inside the temple.
Temple officials noticed the incident and caught him at the scene. He was subsequently handed over to police after being detained by temple authorities.
Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tariqul Islam confirmed the arrest.
“He was mentally unwell. After entering the temple, his mental condition deteriorated and he began vandalising things inside,” the police officer said.
He added that temple authorities detained the student before police arrived, rescued him and took him into custody. A case was filed and he was subsequently sent to court.
