SYLHET, Sept 08 (V7N) — Experts’ opinions will be given priority in efforts to build a modern, well-planned and sustainable Sylhet city, said Sylhet Development Authority (SUK) Chairman Rezaul Hasan Qayes Lodi.
He made the remarks at a stakeholder meeting organised by SUK with experts from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), professional engineers, architects and representatives of relevant organisations.
The meeting was held at the conference room of the Sylhet Development Authority at around 11:30am on Monday.
Presiding over the meeting, SUK Chairman Rezaul Hasan Qayes Lodi, who holds the rank of an additional secretary, said sustainable infrastructure development, resolving waterlogging and ensuring risk-free urbanisation were urgent priorities considering Sylhet’s geographical realities.
“Constructive advice from experts from the Departments of Civil Engineering and Architecture at SUST, as well as experienced representatives of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), Institute of Architects, Bangladesh (IAB), Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) and the housing sector, will play a significant role in SUK’s future development plans and implementation of the master plan,” he said.
“We can provide the people with a modern and safe Sylhet only through coordinated efforts by all stakeholders,” he added.
The meeting discussed planned housing development, compliance with the National Building Code for high-rise buildings, reducing earthquake and fire risks, and ensuring proper utility management of gas lines and drainage systems.
The participating experts highlighted various infrastructural problems facing Sylhet city and assured SUK of their full cooperation in its overall development activities.
The meeting was conducted by SUK Executive Director Md Sadiur Rahman Jadid.
Among others, Professor Dr Mushtaq Ahmed and Professor Dr Md Shahidur Rahman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at SUST attended the meeting.
Also present were IEB Sylhet Centre Chairman Engineer Md Zainal Abedin, General Secretary Engineer Mohammad Shahjahan Mahmud, Public Works Department (PWD) Executive Engineer Md Abu Zafar, Assistant Architect Engineer Raihan Ahmed, Jalalabad Gas Deputy Manager (DM) Suhedur Rahman, and SUK Assistant Engineer Mahmud Abu Naser.
Representatives from various engineering, architecture, real estate and consulting organisations also attended the meeting, including Akash Associates Chief Executive Engineer Md Mokhlesur Rahman, Zenith Engineers and Architects Managing Director Engineer Abu Ahmad Abdullah, Axis Engineering Managing Director Engineer Md Maksud Ahmed, Naksha Engineers Managing Director Sheikh Jamil Ahmed, SEE Consultant’s Basanta Kumar Singha, Engineers Debashish Bhattacharya, Momtaz Uddin Chowdhury, Nizam Uddin and Amit Chakraborty, along with senior representatives of IAB, IDEB, Sylhet Apartment and Real Estate Group and various consulting firms.
