Natore, Sept 03 (V7N) — Eight people have been sentenced or fined in separate operations at Halti Beel in Naldanga upazila of Natore for drug consumption, playing music at excessive volume and illegal fishing.
Five people were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment for consuming drugs, while another person was fined Tk 18,000 for playing music at a high volume on a boat. Two fishermen were also fined a total of Tk 15,000 for fishing illegally. Two fishing boats used for illegal fishing were seized during the operation.
The mobile court conducted the drives at different areas of Halti Beel from 9:00pm on Tuesday until 3:00am on Wednesday. Naldanga Upazila Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shamim Hossain led the operation.
The five people sentenced for drug consumption were Selim, 40, son of Moslem Ali; Sentu Pramanik, 30, son of Khorshed Ali; Rakib, 25, son of Afzal; Swadhin, 19, son of Shariful; and Millat, 19, son of Asaduzzaman. All are residents of Baroihaati village in Singra upazila of Natore.
Selim and Sentu Pramanik were each sentenced to 10 days in jail, while Rakib, Swadhin and Millat were each sentenced to seven days in jail for consuming drugs on a boat.
Sohan, 21, was fined Tk 18,000 for playing music at an excessively high volume on a boat.
Meanwhile, two fishermen—Mohsin, 60, of Barabarhati village and Chandu, 54, of Dhakdhol village in Singra—were fined a total of Tk 15,000 for illegally fishing in Halti Beel. Two boats used in the illegal fishing were also seized.
According to the upazila administration and Naldanga police, the mobile court conducted the operation in several areas of Halti Beel over several hours. Legal action was taken against those found consuming drugs, playing music at excessive volume and engaging in illegal fishing.
Naldanga Upazila Fisheries Officer Abu Sayeed, police personnel from Naldanga Police Station and members of the Ansar were present during the operation.
