Habiganj, Sept 26 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized Indian goods worth more than Tk 1.5 Crores during a special anti-smuggling drive in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj late Thursday night. The operation was conducted at the Muktijoddha Chattar area along the Dhaka–Sylhet highway, where a truck loaded with Indian cumin was intercepted.

According to the 55 BGB Battalion, a patrol team, acting on a tip-off, stopped a suspicious truck and recovered a huge consignment of Indian cumin after a thorough search. Officials said the consignment had been brought in with the intention of smuggling it to different parts of the country ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festivities.

The seized truck and goods are being processed for handover to the Habiganj Customs Office for legal action.

Lt. Col. Md. Tanjilur Rahman, commanding officer of the Habiganj Battalion, said: “No matter how smugglers change their strategies, BGB remains firm in its operations against cross-border smuggling. Ahead of Durga Puja, surveillance has been increased several times over in the border areas. Such drives are being conducted regularly and will continue in the future.”

BGB sources noted that during September alone, the 55 Battalion has seized smuggled goods, narcotics, and vehicles valued at more than Tk 8.77 Crores in separate operations across the region.

The latest seizure highlights BGB’s intensified vigilance along vulnerable routes, as smugglers often attempt to exploit increased demand for imported goods during major religious festivals.
