Jhalokathi , Aug. 11 (V7N) — A 55-year-old man died after being allegedly beaten by a group of men while trying to protect his son during an attack in Nalchity upazila of Jhalokathi .
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Gobindapur village. The victim, Akkas Khan, was critically injured while intervening when his son, Jasim Khan, 32, was allegedly attacked by several people following a long-standing dispute.
According to police and local residents, Jasim had been involved in a dispute with his neighbour, Sajal Khan. On Sunday afternoon, Sajal, along with his father Selim Khan, his brother Shafik Khan and several others, allegedly attacked Jasim on a road in front of his home when he was alone.
Hearing his son's cries for help, Akkas rushed to the scene. The attackers allegedly assaulted both father and son, leaving them seriously injured.
Local residents rescued the two men in a critical condition and took them to Nalchity Upazila Health Complex. They were later referred for advanced treatment in Dhaka.
Akkas died at around 11:30pm while he was being taken to Dhaka. His son Jasim was admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for treatment.
Doctors said Akkas died from excessive bleeding caused by a serious head injury.
Nalchity Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Touhiduzzaman Sohag said police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident. The victim's body was sent to the Jhalokathi Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
He said the suspected attackers had gone into hiding and police were conducting operations to arrest them. Preparations were also under way to file a case over the incident.
