Mongla, Oct 2 (V7N) – The Meteorological Department has urged Mongla Sea Port to hoist a local warning signal No. 3 as a deep depression forms over the Bay of Bengal. As of Thursday noon, the system is located approximately 735 kilometers southwest of Mongla Port.
The depression has caused heavy rainfall and gusty winds in Mongla and the adjacent coastal areas, including the Sundarbans, since late Wednesday night. Thick clouds have obscured the sun since early Thursday morning, creating dark overcast conditions.
The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen and boatmen to stay ashore due to rough sea conditions in the deep Bay of Bengal and rivers and channels around the Sundarbans.
Harun Or Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of Mongla Meteorological Office, said, “Rainfall will continue in the coastal areas due to the deep depression. Its movement is being closely monitored to determine whether it is intensifying or weakening. Further updates on the system will be provided accordingly.”
Currently, seven foreign commercial vessels are stationed at Mongla Port, carrying cargo including fertilizer, gas, coal, and clinker. Loading, unloading, and transportation operations at the port have been partially disrupted due to the rainfall and adverse weather conditions. Fertilizer unloading has been temporarily halted to prevent damage from wet conditions, according to the Port’s Harbour Department.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged all maritime operators to take necessary safety precautions.
