CHATTOGRAM, May 28, (V7N) – Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, the first-ever Finance Minister from Chattogram, has said that steering Bangladesh’s fragile economy toward stability and progress will take time, but the government is committed to building a welfare state.
Speaking to journalists after performing Eid-ul-Azha prayers at Darus Salam Jame Mosque in Uttar Kattali, he urged citizens to grant the administration time to deliver results: “We are accountable to you as your elected representatives. We are advancing towards a welfare state, InshaAllah.”
Khasru noted that unlike previous years, prices of essential goods did not rise during Eid-ul-Azha, and in fact declined. He emphasized that efforts are underway to keep prices within the purchasing capacity of ordinary people, adding: “I am hopeful that prices will gradually decline. But we will need to allow some time for this.”
The Minister also previewed the upcoming 2026–27 national budget, scheduled for June 11, saying it will provide citizens with a new perspective on the economy. He stressed that superficial growth is not enough; benefits must reach the general populace.
He acknowledged inheriting a fragile economy from previous governments and pointed to global challenges, including conflict in the Middle East, but reaffirmed the administration’s determination to pursue prosperity.
Reflecting on the spirit of Eid-ul-Azha, Khasru said the festival embodies sacrifice beyond rituals: “We must sacrifice our own interests and contribute to the welfare of others – for our nation, our people, and our neighbours.” He urged citizens to abandon self-centered mindsets and foster an environment of mutual respect.
This statement ties economic policy with moral responsibility, positioning the government’s agenda as both pragmatic and values-driven, aiming to stabilize the economy while reinforcing social solidarity.
