Pabna, May 22 (V7N) — A Bangladesh court has sentenced two accused individuals to prison after one allegedly supplied illegal drugs to another inside a courtroom during an ongoing hearing in Pabna, in an incident that has sparked concern among legal authorities.

The incident came to light on Thursday night, although the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon inside the courtroom of the Senior Judicial Magistrate Fourth Court on the seventh floor of the Pabna Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Matiur Rahman delivered the verdict through an immediate summary trial following the incident.

According to court sources, accused Turya Islam Asif had appeared before the court in connection with a murder case. While standing in the dock, he allegedly attempted to hand over narcotics to fellow accused Sujon Ahmed Rony, who was being held in custody in a separate robbery case.

The suspicious activity drew the attention of lawyers present in the courtroom as well as on-duty police officers, who immediately searched both men.

During the search, police recovered approximately 20 grams of cannabis from Asif and four yaba tablets from Rony.

Following the seizure, the Court Sub-Inspector (CSI) of the court police submitted a written complaint along with a seizure list. The court subsequently took cognizance of the complaint and conducted a summary trial on the spot.

After the hearing, Judge Matiur Rahman sentenced Turya Islam Asif to six months in prison, while Sujon Ahmed Rony received one year of rigorous imprisonment.

Confirming the matter, Pabna District Court Public Prosecutor Advocate Golam Sarwar Khan Jewel described the incident as alarming.

“It is deeply concerning that narcotics were being supplied inside a courtroom. This demonstrates how far drug abuse and trafficking have spread,” he said.

He added that the court’s immediate action and swift trial would play an important role in maintaining law and order.

“Quick punishment for clear and visible offences sends a strong deterrent message and can help reduce criminal tendencies,” the public prosecutor added.
