Dhaka, Nov 23 (V7N) – Students at the Hasna Begum dormitory of Eden Mohila College were gripped by panic after Saturday evening’s earthquake caused cracks in the walls and large sections of plaster to fall from the ceiling.
The tremor, recorded on November 22 around evening hours, prompted many students to rush out of their rooms and gather in the open courtyard shortly after midnight. Several students staged a brief protest, alleging severe safety concerns inside the dormitory.
Following the quake, visible cracks appeared along multiple walls, while portions of ceiling plaster collapsed inside different rooms. The damage intensified fears among residents about the structural stability of the building.
A resident student, Mou, said the tremor caused parts of the wall to crumble. She said they felt unsafe staying upstairs, prompting them to move outside. According to her, the hall superintendent told students they could temporarily shift to the Bangamata Hall if they felt unsafe. Students later stayed outside while assessing the situation.
Another student, Mokarrama Khatun, said they had been living in risky conditions for a long time and the recent quake had heightened the danger. She demanded urgent repairs and immediate safety measures.
Hall Superintendent Rikta Akter told students they were free to relocate to Bangamata Hall if they felt unsafe, adding that the matter would be reviewed by Sunday.
Office assistant Munmun said the overall condition of the dormitory was not severely damaged, claiming the portions that fell had already been structurally weak.
After several consecutive tremors in recent weeks, students expressed growing anxiety and urged authorities to conduct an immediate structural safety inspection, repair the damaged sections, and ensure a secure residential environment.
