Aug 13 (V7N) —A total of 240,720 cases involving financially disadvantaged litigants have been disposed of at government expense through the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO). information was revealed in a report on activities of Legal Aid from 2009 to July 2026 published on the organization's website.
According to the report, of the total disposed cases, 2,369 cases were disposed of through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, 237,527 through the 64 District Legal Aid Offices across the country, and 824 through the Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.
The government provides these services at public expense under the Legal Aid Services Act to financially disadvantaged and incapacitated litigants.
The NLASO, under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, conducts the activities.
In the same period, a total of 613,921 people have received legal advice services at government expense through the NLASO, the report said.
Of them, government-funded legal assistance was provided to 27,580 people through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, 351,253 people through legal aid offices in all 64 districts, and 22,327 people through the Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.
In addition, 212,520 people received legal advice through the National Legal Aid Helpline Call Centre (toll-free 16699), while 241 people received legal advice through online platform (Facebook Messenger).
Meanwhile, the NLASO has recovered Taka 387 crore 81 lakh 92 thousand 745 as compensation for indigent litigants, the report said.
Initially, legal services were provided to indigent people at the district level. Later, the services were extended to the Supreme Court, Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and prisons across the country.
Of the recovered amount, Taka 380 crore 78 lakh 11 thousand 379 was recovered through the 64 District Legal Aid Offices, while Taka 7 crore 3 lakh 81 thousand 366 was recovered through the Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.
During this period, 15,63,566 beneficiaries received legal assistance at government expense.
The legal services are being provided through 64 District Legal Aid Offices, the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, Labour Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and the National Helpline Call Centre for government legal assistance (toll-free 16699).
