Dhaka, Aug 13 (V7N)- Bangladeshi students who won medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (August 13).

During the meeting, the students shared their experiences and achievements from participating in the Mathematical Olympiad. The Prime Minister congratulated them and wished them continued success.

The Bangladesh Girls Mathematical Foundation (BGMF) sought government support to expand Mathematical Olympiad activities at the grassroots level. The Prime Minister assured them of the necessary support.

When a proposal was made to establish a fund to expand Mathematical Olympiad activities at the school level, the Prime Minister immediately agreed to provide funding through the Ministry of Education.

She also agreed to a proposal from the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BDMO) to introduce 'Activity-Oriented Mathematics' in schools.

Another proposal was made to introduce a separate mathematics proficiency test, similar to IELTS, to assess the mathematical skills of school teachers. The Prime Minister assured that the proposal would be seriously considered.

The Prime Minister said the government would provide necessary support in the future to further expand mathematics practice and Mathematical Olympiad activities across the country.

Education Minister Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, Prime Minister's Education and Primary and Mass Education Adviser and Prime Minister's Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin, IMO National Coach Mahbubul Alam Majumder, BGMF Chair Professor Sadia Hamid Kazi and BDMO member Md. Abdul Hakim Khan were present at the meeting.

The medalists present included Viqarunnisa Noon School and College student Monami Zaman, who won bronze medals at both the IMO and EGMO; Chittagong College student Md. Raihan Siddiqui, an IMO silver medalist; Dhaka Imperial College student Jawad Hameem Chowdhury, Cantonment English School and College student Mohammad Marzuk Rahman, Anand Mohan College student Tahsin Khan, RAJUK Uttara Model School and College student M. Jamiul Hossain, all IMO bronze medalists; and RAJUK Uttara Model School and College student Saji Sehnai, an EGMO bronze medalist.
