Dhaka, Oct 17 (V7N) — Leaders of 25 political parties signed the July National Charter-2025 at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban area on Friday (October 17). The signing took place shortly after 5 pm, and was concluded with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus adding his signature.
While 33 political parties had participated in discussions to prepare the charter, some leftist parties did not attend the signing ceremony, including the National Citizens Party (NCP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), BSD (Marxist), and Bangladesh JSD.
Each participating party was represented by two leaders, who signed on behalf of their party. Among the signatories were:
-
BNP: Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed
-
Jamaat-e-Islami: Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher
-
AB Party: Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju and General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad
-
Mass Solidarity Movement: Chief Coordinator Jonayed Saki and Executive Coordinator Abul Hasan
After signing, the leaders raised their hands and displayed the charter to attendees.
The July Charter is the culmination of extensive discussions and consultations facilitated by the National Consensus Commission. The commission conducted several rounds of talks with political parties regarding proposals from the six reform commissions formed in the first phase, covering Constitution, Electoral System, Public Administration, Anti-Corruption, Police, and Judiciary reforms. Consensus was reached on 84 reform proposals, which were incorporated into the draft charter. The draft was reviewed again with input from experts before the commission finalized the written charter, distributing the final copy to all parties last Tuesday.
The signing ceremony had a delayed start. Around 1 pm, a group posing as July fighters staged a protest at the venue with various demands, leading to clashes with police, brick-throwing, and arson. Rain further delayed proceedings. The ceremony eventually began shortly after 1:30 pm with the national anthem, once the chief advisor arrived on stage.
