RANGAMATI, Aug 21 (V7N) — The government has reconstituted the interim Rangamati Hill District Council formed after the mass uprising, appointing Rangamati district BNP president Dipon Talukder Dipu as its new chairman.

The new 15-member council includes leaders and activists from the BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, along with representatives from different indigenous and Bengali communities.

The Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs announced the new chairman and 14 members through a notification issued on Thursday (Aug 20).

Among the new members are BNP district general secretary Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun and former Rangamati district Chhatra Dal president Faruk Hossain Sabbir. A representative from the Khyang community has also been included in the council for the first time.

The other members represent different upazilas of Rangamati, including Shashwata Chakma Rinku, Biltu Chakma, Subimal Chakma, Anil Baran Chakma, Uthwai Mong Marma, Paiching Mong Marma, Prema Talukder, Timothy Khyang, Suparna Deb Barman, Md Toffazzal Hossain, Nandita Das and Chandra Chakma.

According to the ministry notification, the council was reconstituted under the Rangamati Hill District Council Act, 1998, and its subsequent amendments. It will perform all functions of the district council until further orders.

The previous interim council, formed on Nov 7, 2024, has been dissolved, and the order for the new council took immediate effect.

The reconstitution has generated a positive response among BNP activists, particularly because several long-serving party leaders and grassroots organisers have been included.

The new council is expected to focus on education, healthcare, communication, development and public welfare across the hill district.
