Jhalokathi, Aug 19 (V7N) — When heavy rain falls or the sun becomes unbearable, people look for the shelter of an umbrella. In Kathalia, however, Nur Alam spends his days repairing those umbrellas while struggling to keep a roof over his own family’s life.
At 45, Nur Alam of South Anailbunia village in Kathalia upazila is a humble umbrella repairer. His work may appear modest, but it is the only source of income supporting his household.
Nur Alam lives with his visually impaired elderly father, his wife and three young daughters. The earnings from repairing umbrellas provide food for the family and help cover his daughters’ education and his father’s medical expenses.
Every week, Nur Alam travels from one market to another in search of customers. At Bot-tola Bazar, one of Kathalia’s traditional markets, he sits in a small roadside shelter every Saturday and Wednesday morning, repairing torn and damaged umbrellas.
On Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, he moves to Jamaddar Hat. Amid the heat, rain and noise of the market, he sits in a corner of his makeshift shelter, working carefully with a hammer, needle and thread.
His daily income is modest, often barely enough to put food on the family table. Yet despite the financial pressure of supporting three daughters and caring for his blind father, Nur Alam does not complain.
Instead, he continues to work with dignity, relying on physical labour and honest earnings to protect the people who depend on him.
Even when storms and rain send others home, Nur Alam often remains at his small market stall, patiently repairing other people’s umbrellas.
For him, every stitch is more than just a repair. It is a small effort to keep his family fed, his daughters in school and his elderly father cared for.
His life reflects the struggles of countless hardworking people whose modest occupations rarely make headlines, yet whose perseverance quietly keeps their families going.
Local teacher Md Rabiul Islam described Nur Alam’s determination and devotion to his family as an inspiring example for the people of Kathalia.
Nur Alam may spend his days repairing umbrellas for others, but behind his simple tools lies a much bigger story—a father’s responsibility, a son’s devotion and a family’s hope for a better tomorrow.
