Dhaka, Aug 25 (V7N)- The High Court is scheduled to deliver its verdict today, Tuesday, in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old Asia of Magura. The hearing on the death reference and appeal filed by death-row convict Hitu Sheikh concluded on Sunday.
A bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja fixed Tuesday for the verdict after completing the hearing.
Earlier, the High Court heard the death reference and appeal of Hitu Sheikh, who was sentenced to death by the Magura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
On May 17, 2025, Judge M Zahid Hasan sentenced Hitu Sheikh to death for the crime. The tribunal acquitted the other three accused in the case.
According to the case details, Asia was allegedly assaulted in March 2025 while visiting her sister's in-laws' residence in Nijnanduali village of Magura.
She was initially taken to hospitals in Magura and Faridpur for treatment before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She was later referred to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka, where she died on March 13 while undergoing treatment.
The High Court's decision today will determine the outcome of the death reference and the appeal filed by the convicted accused.
