Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N) – Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul has called on doctors to refrain from prescribing unnecessary tests and acting as intermediaries for pharmaceutical companies.

He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon at a program organized by the Bangladesh Private Hospital Clinic and Diagnostic Owners Association.

Dr. Nazrul emphasized that Bangladesh has the capacity to provide proper medical services and that patients should not be forced to travel abroad for treatment. He criticized practices where patients are compelled to buy medicines from specific companies, asking, “Are doctors brokers for pharmaceutical companies? To what level are you taking yourselves?”

Citing a personal example, he said a young helper in his household was prescribed 14 tests at a private hospital in Dhaka unnecessarily, prompting him to seek treatment elsewhere.

The legal advisor also highlighted low wages for hospital staff as a factor affecting service quality. “If a nurse earns 12,000 taka, how can she maintain good temperament and provide proper care? Hospital owners should reduce profits to improve services,” he urged.

Dr. Nazrul concluded by appealing to doctors to stop exploitative practices, reminding them that many patients in Bangladesh are poor and vulnerable.
