Teknaf, Aug 03 (V7N) — An armed robbery on the Teknaf–Cox's Bazar highway in southern Bangladesh left one passenger injured by gunfire on Sunday, prompting a security response from law enforcement agencies.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. near Bridge No. 14, adjacent to the Teknaf Land Port, according to local sources.
Witnesses said an armed group from a nearby hilly area blocked the highway by felling a tree across the road, forcing several vehicles to stop before carrying out the robbery. During the incident, the assailants reportedly opened fire, injuring one passenger.
Authorities had not immediately released the identity of the injured person, and the full extent of the losses remained under investigation.
Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Coast Guard personnel were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident and launched operations to restore security and investigate the attack.
Local sources alleged that the robbers specifically targeted three sales representatives of mobile financial services provider bKash who were travelling on a passenger bus named Palaki from Teknaf to Cox's Bazar.
According to those sources, the attackers fled with approximately Tk 60 lakh in business transaction funds belonging to the representatives. However, law enforcement authorities had not independently confirmed the reported amount at the time of publication.
The daylight attack on one of the region's busiest highways has raised concerns among local residents and commuters over public safety and highway security. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
