Sundarbans, Oct 02 (V7N) – A fisherman was killed in a crocodile attack in the Karamjal canal of the Sundarbans on Tuesday afternoon, with his body recovered seven hours later by the Forest Department and local villagers. The victim, 32-year-old Subrata Mandal of Dhangmari, was fishing for crabs when the incident occurred.
According to Forest Official Md. Azad Kabir and local witness Israfil Boyati, Subrata and his companions had entered the forest in the morning with a valid pass for crab collection. At around 3:30 p.m., while crossing the Karamjal canal on their return, a crocodile dragged Subrata underwater. His body was recovered around 10:30 p.m., nearly 500 meters from the attack site, after the crocodile released him.
Following recovery, the body was returned to his residence, and his cremation was completed at the Dhangmari village cremation ground on Wednesday afternoon.
Forest officials confirmed that since Subrata held a valid pass, his family is eligible for a government grant of Tk 3 lakh, which is currently being processed.
The tragedy echoes a similar incident in the same canal last year, when fisherman Mosharef from Bhojonkhali lost his life in a crocodile attack. His family, however, did not receive compensation as he had entered the forest without a valid pass during a restricted period.
