PABNA, Aug 06 (V7N) — Authorities recovered the body of a second schoolboy on Wednesday after he went missing while swimming in the Jamuna River in Pabna's Bera upazila earlier this week, police said.
The body of Binoy Roy, 15, was found at around 3:00 p.m. near the Bawa area close to the Padma Bridge, bringing the search operation for the two missing teenagers to an end.
The first victim, Probhat Sarkar, 15, was recovered on Tuesday afternoon from the Dashpara point in the Kazirhat-Dhalarchar section of the Jamuna River.
Arbinda Sarkar, officer-in-charge of the Kazirhat River Police Outpost, confirmed that both bodies would be handed over to their families after autopsies.
Binoy Roy was the son of Anutosh Roy of Dhaltosha village in Tangail's Nagarpur upazila, while Probhat Sarkar was the son of Mithulal Sarkar of Gazipur Sadar. The two ninth-grade students were cousins.
According to police and local residents, the boys had travelled to Khanpura Madhyapara in Aminpur to visit relatives. On Monday afternoon, they entered the Jamuna River at the Natakhola point for a swim but were swept away by the strong current.
Local residents immediately attempted a rescue but were unable to locate them. Police, the Fire Service and Civil Defence, and a team of divers later launched a joint search operation.
Divers recovered Probhat Sarkar's body on Tuesday afternoon before suspending the operation after nightfall due to poor visibility.
Local residents continued searching the river using small boats, and Binoy Roy's body was spotted floating near the Bawa area on Wednesday afternoon. River police later recovered the body by speedboat.
