Habiganj, Aug 10 (V7N) — Two people were killed in a three-vehicle collision involving an oil tanker, a sand-laden truck and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Sunday.
The accident occurred on the Bezura Bridge at around 1pm, bringing traffic on the busy highway to a standstill for nearly two and a half hours and causing long tailbacks on both sides of the crash site.
The deceased were identified as Ripon Mia, 27, of Ratanpur village in Madhabpur, and Abul Khayer, 50, son of Nasir Uddin of the Paschim Madhabpur area.
According to police and local residents, the oil tanker and the sand-carrying truck collided head-on while crossing the bridge. The impact caused the truck to lose control and crash into a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw travelling nearby.
Ripon Mia, who was on the truck, and Abul Khayer, a passenger in the CNG, died at the scene.
Police from Madhabpur Police Station, officers from the Shayestaganj Highway Police and Fire Service personnel went to the scene after receiving the report. They recovered the victims and transported the injured to a nearby hospital.
The bodies were later recovered and kept at the Shayestaganj Highway Police Station pending completion of the legal procedures.
Madhabpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Faruk Mia said the crash occurred after the oil tanker and sand truck collided, causing the truck to overturn onto the CNG-powered auto-rickshaw.
He said traffic was suspended following the accident and resumed after police and firefighters removed the damaged vehicles from the highway.
Shayestaganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shubha Ranjan Chakma said authorities were taking steps to hand over the bodies to the families.
He added that the vehicles involved had been seized and necessary legal procedures had been initiated.
