Dhaka, Dec 28 (V7N) – The physical condition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital, has become extremely critical, according to a member of her medical board.
Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the medical board treating Khaleda Zia and also a BNP Standing Committee member, told journalists that her condition cannot be described as improving. “It cannot be said that her condition has improved in any normal sense. Her condition is extremely critical and she is passing through a very crisis-ridden moment,” he said.
Dr Zahid Hossain briefed reporters on Khaleda Zia’s latest health condition shortly after midnight on Saturday, around 12:30 am, without any prior announcement, in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where she is currently receiving treatment.
He said Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23, and her physical condition deteriorated significantly after admission. Due to the continuous decline in her health, she was first shifted from a cabin to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), he added.
Regarding her ongoing treatment, Dr Zahid Hossain said that both local and foreign physicians are involved in her medical care, including her daughter-in-law, Dr Zubaida Rahman.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman visited his ailing mother at the hospital after returning from London on December 25, marking his first return to Bangladesh in 17 years. After spending the day attending various programmes on Saturday, he again visited Khaleda Zia at the hospital and stayed for more than two hours, leaving the premises at 11:58 pm.
Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital since November 23 under the supervision of a medical board led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, comprising both domestic and international specialists.
She has been suffering from multiple health complications, including diabetes, kidney disease, heart conditions and lung-related problems, which doctors say continue to fluctuate. As part of her ongoing treatment, several medical examinations are being conducted regularly.
Amid her worsening health condition, the BNP had earlier called for Khaleda Zia to be taken abroad for advanced treatment. However, doctors advised against air travel, stating that her physical condition was not suitable for flying. As a result, her treatment is continuing in Bangladesh.
