Darwin, Aug 14 (V7N)- Bangladesh took an eight-wicket lead over Australia on the second day of the first Test at the Marrara Oval in Darwin on Friday (August 14).
Mominul Haque and Tanzid Hasan Tamim resumed Bangladesh's innings on the second day and put together a strong partnership.
The pair were closing in on Bangladesh's highest Test partnership on Australian soil. However, Mominul was dismissed for 49, ending their 102-run partnership.
The previous record of 108 runs was set by Habibul Bashar and Hannan Sarkar in 2003. As a result, Mominul and Tanzid fell just short of breaking the record.
After Mominul's dismissal, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Tanzid at the crease. The two batters continued to score responsibly and helped Bangladesh move into the lead with eight wickets still in hand.
Earlier, Bangladesh's pace attack bowled Australia out for 198 in the first innings, with Hasan Mahmud claiming six wickets. Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain took two wickets each.
Bangladesh are now in a strong position to build a substantial first-innings lead in the Darwin Test.
