Dhaka, Aug 13 (V7N)- The nomination papers of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram, nominated by the 11-party alliance for the country's 23rd presidential election, have been submitted to the Election Commission.
A delegation led by 11-party alliance coordinator and Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad submitted the nomination papers at the Election Commission office on Thursday morning.
Senior leaders of the alliance's partner parties were also present at the time.
Shafiqur Rahman, MP for Dhaka-15 and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir, is the proposer of Oli Ahmed's nomination, while Narayanganj-4 MP Abdullah Al Amin is the supporter.
Meanwhile, Thursday is the final day for submitting nomination papers for the presidential election.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to hold a meeting with senior government ministers and BNP leaders at the Secretariat at 12:30 pm. The BNP presidential candidate is expected to be announced following the meeting.
The nomination papers of the BNP candidate are scheduled to be submitted to the EC by 1 pm.
BNP Secretary General and Local Government Affairs Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is being strongly discussed as the party's potential presidential candidate.
BNP sources said on Wednesday that BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman had called a meeting of the party's senior leadership for Thursday afternoon. However, the party does not want to formally describe it as a Standing Committee meeting to avoid controversy.
At a BNP Standing Committee meeting on August 10, Tarique Rahman was given responsibility for selecting the party's presidential candidate. Following the meeting, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed informed journalists of the decision.
