Brahmanbaria, Dec 26 (V7N) – Rumin Farhana, Deputy International Affairs Secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has launched her independent electoral campaign for the Brahmanbaria-2 (Bijoynagar-Ashuganj) seat after being denied the party nomination.
On Thursday afternoon, she visited her grandfather’s and grandmother’s graves at her family cemetery in Islampur, Budhanti Union, Bijoynagar Upazila, to begin her campaign. Farhana spoke with local residents after the visit, expressing her determination to represent the people of the constituency.
Nomination papers for her independent candidacy were collected by former local Jubo Dal leader Ali Hossain. Farhana is expected to contest the election under the symbol of a “duck.”
The BNP-led alliance has officially nominated Maulana Junayed Al Habib of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh as its candidate for the same seat, contesting with the “date palm tree” symbol. Farhana criticized this decision as “disrespectful,” stating that local residents had demanded her nomination.
Speaking to journalists, she highlighted her 17-year-long activism for justice and citizens’ rights, asserting that voters will ultimately decide the outcome. “I have started campaigning today and seek the prayers and support of the local people,” she said.
Local political sources noted that although Farhana remains active in the constituency, the party’s internal decision-making prevented her nomination. Her independent candidacy could introduce a new dynamic in the Brahmanbaria-2 electoral race.
Farhana has announced that she will complete all formalities for her nomination by the deadline of December 29.
