Dhaka, Dec 23 (V7N)- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has reached an electoral agreement with the religious political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament election.
The announcement was made at a joint press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Tuesday (December 23) afternoon.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names of BNP-nominated candidates for the remaining constituencies and confirmed the seat-sharing arrangement with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
Under the agreement, BNP has allocated four parliamentary seats to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. The agreed candidates are:
-
Junaid Al Habib – Brahmanbaria-2
-
Ubaidullah Faruk – Sylhet-5
-
Monir Hossain Qasemi – Narayanganj-4
-
Manjurul Islam Afendi – Nilphamari-1
Speaking at the press conference, Mirza Fakhrul said that a certain group is deliberately obstructing the path to democracy. He alleged that the law and order situation has deteriorated significantly due to government failure, which he said poses a threat to a free and fair electoral environment.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed clarified the seat-sharing understanding, stating that BNP will not field candidates in constituencies allocated to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and likewise, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam will not nominate candidates in constituencies where BNP’s “sheaf of paddy” candidates are contesting.
The agreement is part of BNP’s broader strategy to strengthen its electoral alliance ahead of the national polls scheduled for February.
