Dhaka, July 26 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized the urgent need for restoring democracy and ensuring accountability in all sectors of governance. He made the remarks while addressing a discussion at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Saturday.
“Democracy has been systematically dismantled over the past 15 years,” said Mirza Fakhrul. “This collapse of democratic institutions and lack of accountability have led to widespread corruption and looting.”
He reiterated BNP’s firm stance on democracy, saying, “We believe in a democratic process and demand logical, fair elections. The country must transition toward democracy without delay.”
The BNP leader stressed that meaningful reforms are essential in both the state structure and the economy, noting that such transformation is a gradual process that cannot be achieved overnight.
In his speech, Mirza Fakhrul also criticized the proportional representation (PR) electoral method being proposed by some political parties. “The general public is unfamiliar with what PR means,” he argued. “Our people want leaders who are close to them — this connection cannot be established through the PR system.”
Addressing international trade concerns, he warned that new U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump’s policies could pose a serious risk to Bangladesh’s economy. “Trump’s trade tariffs could spell great danger for us. It’s crucial to engage in dialogue with political parties on how to address this looming challenge,” Fakhrul added.
