Teknaf, Aug 19 (V7N) — Nearly fifty Rohingya, including men, women, and children, have reportedly crossed into Bangladesh through the Teknaf border area in Cox’s Bazar. Eyewitnesses say these refugees fled Myanmar by swimming across the Naf River and took shelter at the Teknaf 27 Number Rohingya Camp on Monday afternoon, August 18.
A video circulating shows children and young people running onto a road, their clothes soaked from crossing the river.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Ashiqur Rahman, commander of the Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion, denied reports of the Rohingya crossing. However, Khanjada Shahriar bin Mannan, in charge of Camps 26 and 27, acknowledged hearing about some crossings.
Ongoing conflict between the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army has pushed nearly 50,000 Rohingya to the border areas, awaiting entry into Bangladesh. Authorities remain concerned that more refugees may attempt to cross into the country at any time.
The arrival of Rohingya refugees continues to pose humanitarian and security challenges for Bangladesh, which has been hosting large numbers of displaced persons from Myanmar for years.
