Chattogram, Oct 13 (V7N)- Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam has remained confined to his office for around 22 hours as students continue their protest against the removal of former vice-chancellor Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.

The prolonged confinement has also caused difficulties for the vice-chancellor and others inside the administrative building due to a lack of electricity. As of Monday (October 13), students’ pre-announced programme of a complete shutdown was continuing.

Students locked the main gate of the administrative building at noon on Sunday, demanding the reinstatement of Sayem, who was removed from the vice-chancellor’s post.

During the protest, an individual identified as Engineer Shahriar, who was also inside the building with the vice-chancellor, reportedly fell ill at around 1:30 am. After being examined by CUET doctors, he was taken to hospital.

Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam had broken the lock and entered his office 21 days after his appointment. Upon learning of his arrival, students gathered outside the administrative building and eventually locked its gate, leaving him unable to leave.

On September 21, the Ministry of Education appointed Sheikh Shariful Alam, a professor at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), as CUET’s new vice-chancellor, replacing Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.

Students have been protesting the appointment and demanding Sayem’s reinstatement. Teachers, officers and employees later joined the movement with a complete work stoppage and sit-in programme, further intensifying the standoff on campus.
