Dhaka, Oct 13 (V7N)- The Bangladesh government will take legal action over the alleged harassment of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, former chief adviser to the interim government, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, the Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has said.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference held at the Information Department’s conference room at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Zahed Ur Rahman said the government was identifying incidents involving attacks on and harassment of Bangladeshi citizens abroad, including Dr. Yunus, and taking legal steps in such cases.
He also commented on the possibility of reconciliation with the Awami League, which was ousted following a mass uprising. He said he personally saw little prospect of reconciliation, alleging that those responsible for serious wrongdoing had shown no remorse and were continuing to incite violence rather than apologize.
Referring to the reported treatment of Dr. Yunus and Bobby Hajjaj, the adviser questioned whether reconciliation would be possible under the circumstances.
Regarding former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India, Zahed Ur Rahman said the government wanted her returned to Bangladesh and had already requested India to send her back.
He added that there would be no objection to her return, stressing that the allegations and crimes attributed to her should be addressed through a judicial process in the interest of justice.
The adviser also dismissed speculation over Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed’s absence from the BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ meeting in India.
He said the minister might have had other engagements and noted that the Home Secretary had attended the meeting. He urged against drawing broader conclusions from the minister’s absence.
