Rajshahi, Oct 06 (V7N)- Rajshahi University (RU) has withdrawn the provost of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall following protests over an attack on journalists and students on the campus.
Professor Md Mahbubar Rahman was relieved of his duties amid allegations of negligence following the incident. The university administration has also directed the investigation committee to submit its report within 72 hours.
The decisions were announced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Faridul Islam after discussions with protesting journalists and students late Monday night and early Tuesday.
The university said action would be taken against those found responsible based on the findings of the investigation. The administration also said a Syndicate meeting would be convened to determine further action in accordance with university regulations.
At least 10 people, including four journalists, were injured in the attack in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall on Sunday night. The incident prompted protests by journalists, students and teachers on Monday.
On Monday evening, journalists and students gathered in front of the university's administrative building to protest the administration's decision to file a case against unidentified persons rather than naming specific suspects.
The protesters raised slogans against the university administration and demanded that those responsible be identified and brought to justice. They also raised concerns over the handling of evidence related to the incident.
The university administration later held talks with representatives of the protesters at around 11pm. Following assurances from the vice-chancellor, the protesters announced that their agitation would remain suspended until Thursday evening, October 8.
The university's five-member investigation committee, headed by Professor Md Rezaul Karim, has been tasked with examining the attack and submitting its findings within the stipulated period.
