Barguna, Nov 13 (V7N) — A court in Patharghata upazila of Barguna has fined a man Tk 3,000 and sentenced him to 10 days in jail in default of payment after an investigation proved that he had filed a false robbery case.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday afternoon by Patharghata Senior Judicial Magistrate Md. Ponir Sheikh. The court’s bench assistant, Mobinur Rahman, confirmed the information. The convicted man, identified as Abdur Rob Munshi, 60, is a resident of Purbo Hatempur village in Patharghata upazila.
According to court documents, a few months ago, Abdur Rob lodged a robbery case with Patharghata Police Station against an expatriate named Nazmul Islam. Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam was assigned to investigate the case. After completing the investigation, the SI submitted a charge sheet to the court, stating that the allegations made by the complainant were false and not supported by any evidence or witness testimony.
Based on the investigation report and the presented evidence, the court found the complaint to be fabricated and ruled that the complainant had intentionally filed a false case, thereby wasting police and judicial resources. Consequently, the court imposed a fine of Tk 3,000, with an additional 10 days of imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
SI Shahidul Islam said his investigation clearly established that the allegations were false. “The witness statements and material evidence contradicted the complainant’s claims, and I submitted the charge sheet accordingly,” he told reporters.
The case has drawn attention in the local community as an example of the legal consequences of filing false or misleading complaints intended to harass others.
