RANGAMATI, Nov 06 (V7N) – A district court in Rangamati has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of an elderly fisherman nearly five years ago. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday afternoon by District and Sessions Judge Md. Ahsan Tarek, who also fined the convict Tk 20,000, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of non-payment.

According to court officials, the convicted man, identified as Jamor Kanti Chakma, alias Meraiya, was found guilty of strangling 86-year-old fisherman Abdur Shukur to death in Bilachhari upazila of Rangamati.

Court records show that the incident took place on February 28, 2020, in the Dhupshil Tinkunia Forest Office area of Sakrachhari village. Following a verbal altercation, Jamor Kanti allegedly pinned down the elderly victim and strangled him to death. The next day, on February 29, 2020, a murder case was filed at Bilachhari Police Station naming Jamor Kanti Chakma as the prime suspect.

After nearly five years of legal proceedings, the court found him guilty under Section 302 of the Penal Code based on medical evidence, witness testimony, and the investigative report.

Investigating officer SI Md. Jahangir Alam’s charge sheet noted that the accused intentionally killed the victim in broad daylight in front of witnesses by pressing his throat with both hands and kneeling on his chest, causing suffocation and death. The charge sheet also confirmed that Jamor Kanti Chakma confessed to the crime during his statement recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The judgment marks the end of a prolonged trial that exposed the horrific details of a murder committed over a trivial dispute. Local residents and court officials expressed satisfaction that justice was finally served after years of delay.
