Dhaka, Oct 22 (V7N) – A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the imprisonment of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Sreeshanto Roy in connection with a case filed over allegedly posting anti-Islamic and offensive remarks on social media.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after a hearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. During the session, Sreeshanto was produced before the court while the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Shahjahan Siraj of Chawkbazar Police Station, sought to keep him in custody.

Defense lawyer Saiful Islam appealed for bail, arguing that all sections mentioned in the case were bailable and that his client had the right to be released pending further proceedings. However, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon opposed the plea, saying, “Even if the charges are technically bailable, considering the sensitivity of the case and the social context, bail should not be granted.”

The magistrate observed that there was a mismatch between the charges and the allegations mentioned in the case’s first information report (FIR). The court scheduled the bail hearing for Thursday in the presence of the investigation officer and ordered that the accused be sent to jail in the meantime.

According to the FIR filed on Tuesday by BUET security officer Afghan Hossain, an unidentified person had been posting obscene and anti-religious content targeting Muslim women and Islam from a fake social media account. Investigators later traced the account to Sreeshanto Roy.

Police said the posts had caused outrage among BUET students and the wider Muslim community, as they were deemed to have hurt religious sentiments.

Authorities at BUET have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, but campus sources confirmed that the matter has sparked serious concern among students and teachers. The university administration is reportedly reviewing disciplinary measures pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
