Panchagarh, Jan 13 (V7N) — Despite bright sunshine during the day, a moderate cold wave continues to sweep over Panchagarh, the northernmost district of Bangladesh, with icy northern winds keeping winter’s grip firm on daily life.
According to the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, the lowest temperature in the country was recorded in Panchagarh at 7.5 degrees Celsius at 9:00 am on Tuesday (January 13). At the time, humidity stood at 91 percent, while wind speeds ranged between 8 and 10 kilometers per hour.
This marks the fifth consecutive day that the lowest temperature in the country has been recorded in Tentulia.
Earlier, on Monday (January 12), the temperature dropped to 8.4 degrees Celsius, with humidity at 92 percent, while the day’s maximum temperature later rose to 28 degrees Celsius. On Sunday (January 11), the temperature fell to 7.3 degrees Celsius, 8.3 degrees on Saturday, and the lowest temperature of the current winter season—6.8 degrees Celsius—was recorded on Friday (January 9).
Meteorologists said persistent fog resembling light rainfall over the past few days has caused temperatures to drop gradually, intensifying winter conditions across the district.
Although sunlight appears as the day progresses, it provides little warmth. In the early morning hours, cold winds significantly disrupt normal life, with many residents avoiding leaving their homes unless necessary.
To cope with the biting cold, locals were seen lighting fires at road intersections and near tea stalls during the morning and evening. Hospitals in the district have also reported an increase in cold-related illnesses, particularly among children and elderly people.
Jitendranath Roy, Officer-in-Charge of the Tentulia Meteorological Observatory, said temperatures have been fluctuating over the past few days and confirmed that the lowest temperature in the country was recorded in Tentulia again today.
He added that the current cold conditions are likely to continue for the next few days.
