Tehran, Sep 05 (V7N)- Four US missiles struck an oil tanker near Iran's key oil export hub of Kharg Island, Qatar-based Al Jazeera has reported. An operation is underway to evacuate the tanker following the attack.
Earlier, Iran's Student News Network (SNN) reported that a missile had struck an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island. Iranian media later claimed that four US missiles hit the vessel.
There were no immediate reports of casualties. The extent of damage to the tanker also remains unclear.
Kharg Island is a crucial hub for Iran's oil exports, handling around 90 percent of the country's total crude oil exports.
Meanwhile, explosions were reported near Kharg Island on Saturday. Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said the cause of the explosions was not immediately known.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in recent months over Kharg Island. In July, a US missile was reportedly fired at an empty oil tanker at the island's oil export terminal.
However, the latest claim that four US missiles struck the tanker remains based on reports from Iranian media. Washington has not yet officially confirmed the incident.
