Barisal, May 29 (V7N) – Due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, Barisal is experiencing continuous rain accompanied by gusty winds. As a result, all types of small launch operations from Barisal River Port to internal waterways have been temporarily suspended.
On Thursday (May 29) morning, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) announced that, owing to adverse weather conditions, Barisal River Port has been instructed to hoist warning signal number two and halt launch services on internal routes. This suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
The continuous rainfall has caused significant difficulties for schoolchildren and office workers commuting in the area. Passengers from surrounding districts, including Bhola, Mehendiganj, Hijla, and Lakshmipur, are also facing hardships due to the suspension of launch services.
Senior Observer of the Barisal Meteorological Office, Milan Howlader, reported that the low-pressure system in the northwest Bay of Bengal has led to the issuance of sea warning signal number three and naval warning signal number two. In the past 24 hours until 9 am Thursday, 39.9 millimeters of rainfall was recorded.
Howlader added that gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour are expected across various parts of the southwestern region, including Barisal, within the next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall is also likely to continue in many areas of the district. No significant weather changes are anticipated over the next 48 hours.
