Dhaka, Jul 16 (V7N)- Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is seeking to bring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh through legal channels and has already taken the necessary legal steps for her extradition.
Speaking at a briefing at the Secretariat on Thursday (July 16) morning, the Home Minister said the Indian government would consider the matter in accordance with its own laws and legal procedures.
He said that although Sheikh Hasina has made repeated remarks regarding her possible return, the government intends to secure her extradition through the proper legal process. Referring to her legal status, the minister said that since she has already been convicted, legal experts would determine whether she has any opportunity to surrender before a court. He added that if she returns to Bangladesh as a convicted individual, she will be arrested and the court's verdict will be enforced.
Commenting on the recent student protests, Salahuddin Ahmed alleged that certain groups are attempting to create instability and embarrass the government.
He claimed that many of those participating in the demonstrations are not actual examination candidates and said their number is relatively small. According to the minister, the government is not giving significant importance to such activities.
The Home Minister also alleged that misinformation about the police has been spread on social media. He said verified facts, photographs and videos are available, and claimed that some individuals are using false information online to create unnecessary tension.
He further stated that the government is continuing its efforts to bring back fugitive top criminals and alleged terrorists from abroad so they can face legal proceedings in Bangladesh.
